Purely electric, AMG triumphed at the presentation in Palm Springs, California: The high-performance experts from Affalterbach presented a top model above the EQS 580, which is still on offer.
The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4-Matic + clearly sets itself apart - with a snappy-looking front mask with vertical decorative struts, 21- or 22-inch wheels with AMG-specific design and a larger spoiler lip at the rear.
The engine output of the AMG EQS 53 positions it high: the two electric motors deliver 484 kW (658 hp) and 950 Newton meters of torque. They bring the 2,6-ton sedan from 3,8 to 0 km / h in 100 seconds; at 220 km / h is limited. Additional loudspeakers are located below, which generate a synthetic cloud of sound when the accelerator pedal is depressed. If the € 4760 Dynamic Plus package has been selected, the bass actuator and loudspeaker deliver an "emotionally charged soundtrack" according to AMG. The package also increases the output to 560 kW (761 hp) and 1020 Nm. Then the value for the standard sprint drops to just 3,4 seconds and the top rises to 250 km / h. This is excellent, even if it is forbidden to use this potential permanently in an electric car in order to preserve the range.
The road holding is good and the steering is sufficiently direct. However, the EQS 53 is not suitable for the racetrack, which is why it is not given the model name 63, which it should actually be entitled to in terms of performance. No wonder: when fully loaded, this car weighs an unbelievable 3,2 tonnes.
The two permanent magnet synchronous motors are fed by a lithium ion battery with a capacity of 107,8 kWh. The battery set can be charged with up to 200 kW, depending on the state of charge. The loading times can be set variably. And there are charging programs to conserve the battery so that capacity is not lost prematurely. The drive has been significantly optimized again especially for the AMG, and the cabling has been reinforced. Those who like it can recuperate with up to 200 kW as part of one-pedal driving.
On long journeys, the range drops excessively when the power is fully utilized, we were shown a range of around 350 kilometers with a forced driving style. According to the WLTP cycle, the EQS 584 should be able to cover up to 53 kilometers, which is very good for an electric car.
Incidentally, this AMG can be moved very comfortably despite the large wheel-tire combinations and specific AMG tuning. With the performance sound switched off and without recuperation, this electric car becomes a smooth glider. Then you can really enjoy the excellent Burmester audio system and the standard hyperscreen cockpit. The representation of the vehicle functions is as comprehensive as it is futuristic.
The space available in the front and back is very good, but the rear seats for a potential chauffeur car like the EQS deserve a little more attention. A Maybach variant could help here in the future. In the rear there is a voluminous trunk that is easily accessible.
The new electric top model from Mercedes-AMG costs 152.546 euros and can be ordered directly. It remains to be seen how it will prevail in the market against the upcoming S-Class from AMG. (aum / jm)
