The Kia Rio bravely competes against renowned competitors in the small car segment. What surprises with the new edition: that the little one not only offers what the competition has to offer, but that it has also arrived in the price segment of premium manufacturers.
The Kia Rio is no longer a cheap offer. It is also no longer about conquering the market through low prices, but about entering the small class of premium manufacturers. But the unbeatable guarantee promise of seven years is unbeatable. This is where the competitors look with their modest two years old.
From the outside, the new Rio appears pleasant and pleasant. There is no well-proportioned perspective that is unpleasant. From the rear it resembles the BMW 1 Series in its suggestive width, from the front it remains true to the Kia design line with the typical, now slightly further developed "grille nose" grille. The Kia and Hyundai design, which is responsible for the German design boss Peter Schreyer (ex-Volkswagen), is confirmed by renowned design awards such as the iF Award and the Red dot Award. Incidentally, it was created in the Californian design studio of the brand in Irvine and in Frankfurt.
Generous interior and a large touchscreen
The interior is quite large for a small car, at least it feels spacious. This applies to the front and back, where there is surprisingly a lot of knee space. This small car is therefore suitable for long distances for four adults. At first glance, the driver's workplace appears overloaded with switches and buttons. Twelve (!) Buttons are installed in the multifunction steering wheel alone. In fact, the logical arrangement and ergonomic placement is so well done that you get used to it very quickly and the operation turns into flesh and blood. Functionally and creatively, the cockpit is undoubtedly one of the best in the segment.
The screen above the center console is equipped as a touch-sensitive information carrier. The 7-inch touchscreen is also available independently of a navigation system. We drove with the navigation system from TOMTOM so well that we can only recommend this extra (depending on the equipment variant it costs between 790 and 990 euros and is standard in the Platinum variant). Easy to use, very good display, real-time traffic information that works very reliably; you simply shouldn't do without it.
Many extras are already standard in the basic version
Otherwise, the little Kia is equipped with the usual assistants that are not a matter of course in this class, but only belong to the higher segments. The basic version already has a powerful audio system, the multifunction steering wheel in leather, central locking with radio remote control, power windows, a start-stop system and other extras. In the "Spirit" version we tested, there is much more: e.g. automatic climate control, heated seats in the front, heated leather steering wheel, reversing camera, Bluetooth hands-free system, cruise control, rear parking sensors, electrically folding exterior mirrors, an autonomous emergency brake assistant with pedestrian detection and the lane departure warning system, just to name a few most important extras to name.
Driving with 84 HP appears to be a little underpowered even in a small car. That can be misleading. The 1,2-liter four-cylinder sometimes gives the impression of weakness, but we are not in a sports car. If you shift hard and adjust the six gears again and again to the speed, you will make rapid progress. However, the Kia seems a bit loud in the upper speed range. Did Kia save insulation here and there?
There is nothing to criticize on the chassis side. The little boy scurries briskly and can be controlled at any time through the bends, digests even bad roads, is agile and conveys the typical small car feeling. That means: lively and cheeky he feels most comfortable in city traffic.
